How to Plan Entertainment For A Wedding Reception

Once you’ve gotten over the joy of finding one of your family members is getting married, the sudden realisation that you’ve gotten one hell of a lot of planning to do doesn’t take long to sink in! Maybe you’ve been asked to be your best mates ‘best man’ and he’s lumped you with the task of organising an entertainment filled evening for all the guests. Where to Start

The first thing you should do is think about who’s coming and also what you think the bride and groom would like to see or hear at their wedding reception. It’s often all to easy to think about what you’d like to have, but just think of who you’ll have to answer to when you book your favourite punk band to play! A good wedding reception should be an evening that everyone can enjoy. Friday Street Music advise their clients to think about the different stages of the evening. Maybe having a pianist of acoustic guitar player whilst people are coming in and enjoying their first glass of champagne; then once all the speeches are done you might like to have a cover band playing party classics for an hour; of course after many glasses of wine/port/bubbles and beer who could resist the urge to dance around like a fool to a DJ taking the party right through to the early hours. As you can see, there are many aspects to think of, but try and plan an evening with entertainment spread throughout to avoid your guests getting bored.

On the Night

Try and make sure that before the evening starts, all the acts you have performing are fully briefed and know how long they are playing for, how much they are getting paid and where they will be performing. If everyone knows what’s going on before the evening starts, you’ll save yourself running round like a headless chicken trying to find the DJ ten minutes before his due to start. If you have booked a cover band to play, make sure you have discussed any special requests beforehand as they will need to make sure they know how to play them to avoid any disappointments. Also, it’s very wise to discuss equipment requirements; will they bring a PA system/amps/drums etc. Most Dj’s you book for a wedding will be more than happy to take a play list from you. Obviously, make sure this is all agreed on at the time of booking.
